Checking water for lead — questions

No. The EPA has stated there is no safe level of lead in drinking water. The EPA action level of 15 ppb triggers regulatory response for public systems — but this is not a safe level. Any amount of lead exposure is cause for concern, particularly for children and pregnant individuals.
Home test kits cannot detect lead at concentrations relevant to the EPA action level, cannot identify contamination source, cannot provide certified results accepted by regulatory agencies, and cannot be used for school compliance or real estate transactions. Only NYS ELAP certified analysis provides results you can act on.
Anyone in a home, apartment, co-op, condo, or commercial property with plumbing over 30 years old; home buyers before closing; tenants with concerns; school and daycare administrators; property managers; and anyone whose water has a metallic taste or whose fixtures show staining.
